What is the next big trend we will see in the field of dentistry?

  • The population is aging and becoming more diverse, and we are seeing different disease patterns. Older adults are more likely to preserve their teeth and remain active consumers of oral healthcare.
  • The healthcare delivery system is changing rapidly with the implementation of the Affordable Care Act.
  • Consumer habits are shifting with Americans increasingly relying on technology and seeking greater value from their spending.
  • The ethnic makeup of the US population will change radically in future years.
  • Dental and medical tourism will continue to increase.
  • As the number of dentists decrease, there is a developing need for an expanded oral healthcare team to provide preventive and restorative services.
  • There will be more foreign-trained dentists practicing in the US.
  • There will be an increase in the number of dental hygienists that work without supervision, in a variety of settings, for the benefit of the public.
  • There will be an increase in the use of dental therapists.
  • There will be a trend towards larger, multi‐site dental and dental hygiene practices.
  • There will be a growing importance on outcomes and cost‐effectiveness that will encourage alternative models of oral healthcare.
  • There will be a move to continue integrating oral health services into overall health services.

If you were not working in the dental arena, what would be your dream job?

Being a physician.

When you are searching for dental material online, where do you go to find it?

Cochrane Collaboration, AAP, European Federation of Periodontology, The Lancet, The New England Journal of Medicine, Dentistry IQ, ADHA, ADA, etc.

Which is your preference: Desktop, Laptop, Tablet, or Smartphone?

It depends. I use a laptop (PC), an iPad, and an iPhone. It depends where I am! I do not use a desktop.

Fleetwood Mac, Jay Z, The Who, or Taylor Swift?

Fleetwood Mac; and Brooks and Dunn!

What pets do you have, if any?

I share two dogs (Scooter and Benji) with my neighbor, who is kind enough to let us “foster” them whenever we feel the need (which is often!). We travel too much, which makes having our own pets difficult. I would have at least three dogs if I could! Here is a photo of the three dogs we share(d), one passed away last year (Rocky, the long-haired Chihuahua) and is over the Rainbow Bridge.
