Two things many parents have in common with their kids – a fear of visiting the dentist and a strong bond with their smartphones. Those same parents who developed poor dental hygiene as kids are now finding themselves on the other end of this spectrum by seeking out help to encourage their children and teens to develop healthy dental habits.

These five apps below empower kids and assist parents by encouraging children of all ages to feel good about maintaining their oral hygiene.

Kids’ Dental Health

app-kidsdentalhealthRecommended for kids ranging from ages four and up, this entertaining and interactive app by Alexandr Stacanov from TwoTea Applications is recommended both dental and educational professionals alike. The Kids’ Dental Health app shares colorful dental related games and an educational story that helps remind kids of the importance of good oral hygiene and proper nutrition. It is compatible with your iPod touch, iPhone and iPad. You can find it in the books section of iTunes for $9.99 and it requires iOS 5.0 or later.

Tiny Dentist

This cool, low-cost app is designed for kids anywhere from six to eight. Downloadable from iTunes and Google Play in both free and paid versions, the Tiny Dentist app allows users to play the part of a dental professional and perform procedures like taking X-rays, drilling, whitening teeth, extractions and helping a wide array of patients with their oral care. It uses simple graphics and makes anyone who practices good dental care the hero. Here, kids can sit in the dentist’s chair and be the professional, making trips to the dentist more fun and intriguing than worrisome.

Align On Time

app-alignontimeFrom NoMotion Software, the Align On Time app is a free app that benefits Invisalign users and orthodontists. Changing aligners at the correct intervals is essential for optimal results and to minimize treatment cost for patients. Available for free on Google Play, dentists using Invisalign love the app because it allows them to interact with their patients on a virtual level by setting a change date schedule for all of their Invisalign patients with ease. For patients, it sends alerts when it is time to change aligners and what number to change to based on the schedule implemented by their dental professional.

Monster Mouth DDS

app-monstermouthFrom Breaktime Studios, Monster Mouth is a wildly fantastic game for any kids age nine and up. In this simulation of going to the dentist, the dental professionals are not the monsters – the patients are. But these lovable creatures are in good hands. Each one has their own ailments and by successfully treating them in a pain-free manner, everybody wins. Monster Mouth DDS is a vivid, fun and creative way to keep children interested in dental health. With modes you can set from easy to hard, the app is available for $.99 on Google Play.

Flossy

app-flossyOne of the most important things anyone can do to prevent cavities and gum disease is to floss regularly. Flossy, from SlyBits, reminds users to floss each day. This essential step in daily oral care is also the most unpopular and dentists tire of having to remind patients of its importance. Only available on iTunes for Apple users, professionals now have a partner in reminding themselves, their families, and their patients to floss. By pressing the “I Flossed Today!” button each time they floss, they record their flossing history. Users can view how often they did or did not floss as well as the ability to set alarms for different times of the day to send alerts if they have missed a number of days. This app is great for recommending to patients that could add more flossing to their daily regimen.
