The Use of Extracted Teeth in Dental Schools

I’m not sure how far back this practice goes, but currently, most dental schools require students to provide a jar of extracted teeth when they arrive for their first year. These teeth are used for dental anatomy courses, and even mounted in modified typodonts for pre-clinical practice.

An important use for these extracted teeth is the demonstration of clinical skills for certain regional licensure exams. The thing is, there is no real direction as to how you’re supposed to get these teeth. Most students will ask a practicing dentist for extracted teeth, and you really hit the jackpot if you can find a generous oral surgeon. One big issue, however, is that unless these teeth are properly disinfected, they are considered a biohazard. Also, these extracted teeth are typically pretty carious and altered; not ideal for their intended purpose.

Evidently, someone has decided they could profit from this situation, and I just ran across a website that will actually sell you perfectly formed, non-carious teeth of various types in lots of fifty. These teeth have been completely cleaned and are biohazard-free. It might be worth it for an incoming class to consider ordering a batch. However, while it is clear how oral surgeons end up with so many human teeth, I wonder how this website finds enough virgin teeth to sell in huge lots like that. It is slightly disconcerting when you think about how few virgin teeth really need to be extracted!

  1. Hey Katherine,

I was reading your comment and I like it!
Since I´m looking for extracted teeth, I wanted to ask if you know the website, where they are sold? I also have no idea where they get all those teeth from, but I`d like to check it out!
    Thanks!

  3. For some reason, I have been saving all of the teeth that my children have lost over the years. Each child has a small container from the “tooth fairy”. Never considered that they were a bio-hazard. Is there something I should be doing to clean or sterilize these teeth?

  4. We are cleaning out my grandmothers house and found a jar of teeth, she had 4 kids and this has got to be every tooth they ever lost. I am not sure how many but it is a bunch. I would like to sell them if someone is interested please email me. Ajmtrixs@aol.com

They are just in a jar as is. Never been cleaned or what not.

  5. I have 4 perfectly extracted adult teeth if you are interested. My daughter had to have teeth pulled due to over crowding in her mout h before getting braces. The dentist explained that dental schools use these to practice on especially in perfect condition. If you are interested email me at sbolin93@gmail.com

  6. Fast-forward to today, and take a look at what we are eating and more importantly how we are preparing our food. We cut, dice, chop, and boil, steam, and bake almost everything we eat. All of that food preparation has made eating a pretty easy feat to accomplish, in fact experts believe that our jaw line has become less broad and smaller over the years due to how food is prepared and consumed; hence the reason why our wisdom teeth need to be extracted.
